Dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) is one of the key monomers for producing polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Traditional DMT is produced from petroleum-based para-xylene (PX) through oxidation and esterification; while recycled DMT (R-DMT) is recovered through waste PET methanolysis, which is an important path for achieving plastic circular economy.
R-DMT Product Specifications R-DMT produced by ResourceCycle has a purity ≥99.5%, acid value ≤0.05 mgKOH/g, and color (Hazen) ≤10, fully meeting the superior grade standard of GB/T 6869-2008 "Industrial Dimethyl Terephthalate". In terms of heavy metal residues and foreign matter dispersion, it has been certified by SGS third-party testing agency, with no significant difference from petrochemical-source DMT.
Main Application Scenarios First, polyester fiber raw materials: R-DMT can be directly fed into continuous polymerization units to produce polyester staple fiber or filament. It has been successfully applied to a major textile group with a supply volume exceeding 3,000 tons/year. Second, PET film and packaging: Food-grade R-DMT, after refining treatment, can be used to produce BOPET film and food-contact grade preforms, meeting FDA and EU food contact material regulations. Third, engineering plastic modification: Part of R-DMT is used for PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) production, serving automotive electronics, electrical insulation, and other fields.
Cost Comparison with Petrochemical DMT When oil prices are above $70/barrel, the comprehensive production cost of R-DMT is usually 15-20% lower than petrochemical DMT, and as carbon emission quota prices rise, the green premium of R-DMT further stands out. It is estimated that by 2026, China's demand for recycled DMT will exceed 200,000 tons/year, with a broad market space.
R-DMT, as a truly "chemical-grade" recycled monomer, is becoming a strategic raw material for the low-carbon transformation of the polyester industry.
